Die Bezeichnung Kontinentales Frankreich (France continentale) wird
für das europäische Frankreich ohne Korsika benutzt, beispielsweise vom
nationalen geographischen Institut, dem Institut géographique national (IGN).
"La France continentale" oder einfach le continent schliesst die vor seiner Küste im Atlantik, im Ärmelkanal und im Mittelmeer liegenden Inseln einschließlich Korsika aus.
Auf Korsika werden die Bewohner des continent als les continentaux bezeichnet.
Wegen der ungefähren Form wird le continent auch l'Hexagon ("das Hexagon") genannt.
